About Our Lab

The Biomaterials Laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis is a multidisciplinary laboratory encompassing both biomedical engineering and minimally invasive surgery. Projects in our laboratory are primarily devoted to soft tissue repair materials and fixation devices, especially those related to hernia repair and breast reconstruction applications. Our research interests include:

  • Biomechanical testing of materials
  • Evaluation of fixation devices utilized for hernia repair applications (sutures, tacks, glues, etc.)
  • Assessment of the effects of processing conditions (decellularization, crosslinking, sterilization) on the properties of biologic tissue-based scaffold materials
  • Animal models to evaluate the integration and remodeling of synthetic or biologic tissue-based scaffold materials
  • Development of novel scaffold materials
